When AI answers come off as smooth and self-assured, trust goes way up. In this study, 73.2% of participants just accepted the AI’s reasoning—even when it was wrong. Only 19.7% actually overruled the AI.

That sense of fluency creates a kind of “epistemic authority.” People hand over their own judgment to the machine, even when it’s just confidently wrong.

It’s not just about one-off mistakes, either. Relying on flawed AI can really mess with outcomes, especially when decisions need to be made fast and there’s no time for slow, careful thinking.

Individual differences in trust and cognitive ability

Not everyone fell for it. People who trusted AI more were easier to mislead by incorrect answers.

On the flip side, those with higher fluid intelligence didn’t accept AI conclusions so easily. They were more likely to spot and fix AI mistakes.

So, there’s a pretty interesting mix of trust in tech and cognitive ability shaping how AI helps—or hinders—our decisions.

Implications for practice and safety

The study’s authors point out that “cognitive surrender” isn’t always irrational. Sometimes, especially with data-heavy stuff, a good AI can beat human judgment.

But as people lean more on AI, their performance starts to match the AI’s quality. If the AI’s accurate, humans do better. If it’s not, things go downhill fast.

That’s both exciting and a little risky. Human-AI teamwork has potential, but it’s got some real vulnerabilities.

  • Encourage critical appraisal—Design interfaces and prompts that nudge users to question AI outputs. Make it easier to check the reasoning, not just accept it blindly.
  • Calibrate AI confidence—Show uncertainty estimates or confidence levels. Let users know when they should take the AI’s answer with a grain of salt.
  • Strengthen metacognitive training—Offer training to help people monitor their own thinking. Teach them to spot when AI might lead them astray.
  • Monitor reliability—Keep checking how accurate the AI is in each domain. Adjust workflows if the AI starts slipping up.
  • Preserve human-in-the-loop controls—Especially when the stakes are high, make sure humans still have the final say.

Caveats and future directions

These findings shine a light on some important patterns, but they also show we really need more domain-specific research. Different tasks, data sets, and the quirks of each AI system can shift the balance between assistance and automation in unpredictable ways.

There’s a lot left to figure out. Future studies might dig into how training, user experience design, or even just being upfront about AI’s limitations affect how much people hand over their thinking—and what that does to the quality of their decisions.
