The Semiconductor Industry Association has recently released a glowing statement praising GlobalFoundries for a monumental selection. The company has officially been chosen to operate two brand-new semiconductor manufacturing facilities located in Malta, New York.

Representing a massive $21 billion in total capital investments, this project marks a historic turning point. It is the very first semiconductor initiative launched under the collaborative U.S.-Japan Strategic Investment Initiative.

SIA President and CEO Michael Robbins highlighted the project as a major victory for domestic chip production. Furthermore, it exemplifies powerful bilateral cooperation between two global economic superpowers.

Bilateral Cooperation in Action

These upcoming manufacturing facilities will be jointly owned by the United States and Japan. This unique partnership ensures shared strategic goals and enhanced economic security.

The overarching initiative aims to expand critical manufacturing capacity across the region. Additionally, it will support tens of thousands of jobs and significantly bolster long-term supply chain resilience.

Breaking Down the Investment Phases

An initial $10 billion investment will directly fund the construction of the very first fabrication plant. This crucial phase sets the technical foundation for the entire multi-billion-dollar campus.

Once fully operational, this first fab will add approximately 900,000 300mm wafers of annual U.S. manufacturing capacity. Such an injection of domestic supply is expected to stabilize numerous commercial electronics sectors.

The Road Ahead for GlobalFoundries

Following the completion of the first plant, a subsequent $10 billion investment will facilitate the construction of a second fab. This companion facility will feature very similar high-tech production capabilities.

Fully funded by Japan and expertly operated by GlobalFoundries, the first facility is scheduled to break ground later this year. Industry stakeholders are watching closely as this groundbreaking international partnership takes shape.
