Singapore has officially launched a powerful national identity for its semiconductor sector known as SG Semiconductor. Developed jointly by A*STAR and the EDB, this strategic initiative aims to significantly enhance global visibility and ecosystem engagement.

Unveiled by Dr. Tan See Leng at the Innovate Together 2026 forum, the move highlights a robust commitment to technological leadership. The nation currently produces an impressive ten percent of global chips and one-fifth of worldwide semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

Strengthening Ecosystem Engagement and R&D

The sector-wide initiative is heavily backed by a massive S$800 million investment spanning from 2026 through 2030. This funding is channeled directly through the RIE Flagship in Semiconductors to accelerate vital technological advancements. Similar precision and commitment can be observed across various optical fields, echoing developments discussed in our latest optics articles.

Core Technology Domains and Partnerships

SG Semiconductor unifies vital capabilities across infrastructure, talent, and R&D spanning seven core technological domains. These focus areas include advanced packaging, silicon photonics, power electronics, radio frequency gallium nitride, piezoMEMS, flat optics, and IC design.

The recent forum also showcased major industry expansions, such as a large-scale joint laboratory project between Applied Materials and A*STAR. Furthermore, A*STAR has deepened strategic alliances with industry giants like KLA, STATS ChipPAC, and GlobalFoundries to fast-track next-generation manufacturing.
